How to choose your rugby boots ?

Moulded studs? Screw-in studs? Rugby Corner explains everything you need to know to choose your rugby boots.

The range of rugby shoes is very wide. There are 3 major categories:

1. Moulded spikes are recommended for dry pitches and synthetic or hybrid turf. They are often referred to as FG studs (firm ground) or AG studs (artificial grass). Round, triangular or conical studs are recommended.

2. Rugby boots with screw-in studs, recommended for soft or greasy ground, can be fitted with studs of various sizes from 13 mm to 21 mm, made of aluminium or nylon, to suit the condition of the ground.

The studs are called SG "soft ground" studs. Depending on the model, these shoes have 6 or 8 studs. Rugby shoes with 6 studs are softer and give more speed, and are therefore favoured by the three quarters, whereas the 8 studs give a better grip, useful for scrummaging or rucks, and are therefore favoured by the front five.

3. Hybrid boots, as their name suggests, combine the advantages of the two previous models, half moulded, half screwed with more studs, they also allow a better distribution of weight and favour speed. They are often used by third rows, wingers and quarterbacks.

The choice of studs depends on the position you play and the type of field you play on.

Here are the brands that Rugby Corner has chosen to offer you: Adidas, Puma, Canterbury, Gilbert.

Rugby Corner tip: We generally advise taking a shoe that is always a little bigger for better comfort, while taking care to ensure that the foot is always well supported.
